13 hours on an island I had never heard of

After conversations with the Canadians and a quick web search I was prepared for the 10 min cab ride in Reunion to be expensive. At $40 it did not disappoint. I had made sure to take a cab that would take a card because I didn’t want to get Euros. This added 20 min to the trip because it turned out that my guy doesn’t ever take cards, so he had to call the service desk to figure it out. By this point I was very comfortable with French and tried to help him as well.

It is fun to think that when you enter Reunion you are officially in France. That makes the 11 hour flight from Paris a domestic one. Reunion has a population over 850K and is a volcanic island where people actually live in the craters. There is an active volcano that you can hike. Sadly I wasn't there long enough to explore. It was just the way I could get to the Seychelles.

I had chosen a hotel high on the hill that overlooked the ocean because the reviews said the sunrise was not to be missed. Check in was easy and came with a glass of really great wine. There were a couple of travelers in the bar who were nice but I was exhausted so I took my glass mostly to go. A hot shower and ten minutes later I was asleep.

I woke up early to catch the sunrise before I headed to the airport.

It did not disappoint. Back to the airport and this time 40 Euros later (I didn’t end up avoiding the ATM after all), I found out I should have gotten out extra money for breakfast because the Reunion airport only takes French credit cards and Euros. Oh well, I would eat on the plane.

The good news is international plane food is often reasonable.
