Arenal- La Fortuna
Happy Easter!
So this weekend (which started on wed for me because the country of Costa Rica had Semana Sante, the holy week and everything was closed after Wed.) I first went to Arenal, a volcano and La Fortuna.
My bus ride was uneventful. I learned that the direct bus will stop for any large or small gathering of people on the roadside and pick them up whether he has seats or not. He charges some of them and doesnt charge others. It seems completely random and I guess he gets to keep all of the money from the stragglers.
All 26 of us made it one piece and went to our hotel, this was a school trip, where where we were the only guests. This was the first hotel where no one in town, cab driver or otherwise knew where it was. I kind of got the feeling that it had just been built to house us. To put it in another way I think the hotel is built for us. It was twilight zoney.
The next morning we woke up and hiked to a waterfall in La Fortuna. It was beautiful and then we hiked on to the Volcanic Lake, Cerro Chato. This whole experience took about 7 hours and was one of the hardest hikes I have ever done. At the end I was covered with mud, which seems to be forever tatooed on my body, and my clothes are probably going to be a fantastic shade of brown forever. The views were beautiful and we saw Toucans.
I also met a stinky Dutchman whose two favorite words were the f bomb and anyways. "I havent washed my clothes in 3 weeks, F(&%$/$! Anyways" He was so smelly he made me gag everytime the wind blew my direction. He is a Biology PhD that studies birds, so he was a good guy to have around on the hike.
After the hike we went to Tabacon, a volcanic spa. This spa has 15 pools of varying temperatures to swim-float in. It was spectacular and beautiful. All the while we could here the volcano erupting in the background. I have never been so relaxed as I was sitting under the 40 degree Celsius waterfall. It was a perfect ending to a fantastic day.
