Picking up where I left off, kind of. Jan 2020

It has been a while since I wrote anything that wasn’t a medical or operative note. It is  one of those things that can happen in life, I guess.

Somehow life got busier, but also I became a not always solo traveler. I been to amazing places and have had the opportunity to explore Greece, Portugal, Oman, the UAE, Rwanda, Uganda, Argentina, Brazil, Italy (specifically Sicily and Rome), Colombia and Japan (not necessarily in that order) without writing. I with I had written but the evenings and mornings I have spent exploring with people I wouldn’t take back. I have learned a lot about the people I have traveled with and a lot about myself. I always said I liked traveling alone better, but it turns out that is not true. I like both for different reasons. I also learned I would travel with my sister anywhere and it would be great. She and spending time with her is more important than the place, however, it is pretty great to eat all the things, see all the sites, shop at all the stores, and accidentally dress exactly like her about once a year. I have been very fortunate to have all amazing travel companions and to have discovered new countries with them.

When I first started writing this it was January 2020, before covid, before Afghanistan and before Ukraine.

This is what I wrote:

So here I sit in LHR headed to Africa eventually towards Ghana just like my last entry. This time for a partially solo adventure until I join up with one of my colleagues and then the Ghana team with no bags checked (thanks GG) and ready to see what I can find.

Since my last entry I have discovered the SAN to LHR flight. I had heard of this magical beast for a couple of years, but I never paid attention to it. That is until I took the return from Lisbon. It is a wonderful flight and on today’s I met great people who I will keep in touch with. I now have a place to stay in London and have invited them visit in SD.
I have also discovered a woman in the SAN lounge that gives you to go macaroons that I have then distributed on the plane and made friends.
Things I learned on the plane (parents and parent-ish adults may want to stop reading):
The scrum in rugby makes contact with about 30 mph of force (no wonder people (the guy I was sitting beside) don’t remember things that happened the few days before).
When a woman rents a car in Johannesburg, South Africa, she is told to remove all jewelry and watches and not stop at red lights (proceed with caution, but don’t stop).
There is a show that films people watching TV.
People bring pajamas and change to sleep on British Airways which is a strong move.

Off I go for the last of the 27 hour sleep and eating fest in the air!

As we all know things have changed a lot since this almost entry in January 2020, but maybe there will be easy travel again in the coming months. For now I am going to attempt to write from Poland as I head there very soon to volunteer on the border in a medical tent for the refugees.
