Sidewalk chalk and automatic weapons

Wednesday

Today Abdur was late and we were unable to call him. He finally arrived and told one of the members of our team that people were being tear gassed for protesting the statue of the Italian Graziani, the guy who was responsible for massacring many Ethiopians. There is also unhappiness about the upcoming election. Because of the protests the government had turned off the Internet and the phone service so the news wouldn't leave the city. The government attempts to tightly control communication here. They also make everyone pay for it. Skype and programs like it are illegal here.

Today was an operative day. We did three good cases and were joined by the medical student that is on our trip. We had a great day and were served Ethiopian food for lunch. YEEEESSSSSS!!!

After the OR (operating room for those who think I am saying "or"), we went to give out crayons and sidewalk chalk on the pediatric ward (best presets ever). At first the kids didn't seem to know what to do with it so I had no choice but to begin drawing all over the sidewalk. I was soon joined by 3 children (I could be wrong but I am pretty sure it was the giraffe in high heels with lipstick that drew them in). It didn't take much and we were all drawing up a storm for the next hour or so. I even shooed away some cleaning guys who tried to mop up our masterpieces (read as took their mop and soap and hid it) .

On the way home from the hospital, we noticed armed guards in blue camouflage in growing numbers as we approached the prime ministers palace and our hotel. It turns out that in addition to the above the King of Qatar is staying with his entourage at our hotel.

Tonight a child that was unable to come to clinic ( national exams are currently happening) came to our hotel to be seen with his pediatrician and his mother. His pediatrician stayed afterward to talk to us about urology, and most importantly taught as a new word: Woochella which has the connotation of savage and is absolutely derogatory but literally means uncircumcised. Apparently it is usually said with a sneer. After imparting this knowledge he went on his way.

I refuse to even discuss the food choice this evening. I am considering fasting until I get to eat Ethiopian for dinner.
